REJECT THE LABELS DESIGNED TO DIVIDE US

By Dr. David Makongo ·

Do not hear someone call the Bassa or Bamileke man “Makiza” and conclude that the Bassa or Bamileke people are the problem.

Do not hear them say “lazy Bakweri” or “selfish Graffi” and begin to believe that either the Bakweri or the people of the North-West are your enemies.

These are not truths; they are poisonous stereotypes deliberately repeated to divide people who share the same suffering.

The real question is: Who created, promoted and weaponised these labels? Who benefits when the Bakweri distrusts the Graffi, and when both turn against the Bassa and Bamileke?

Our ethnic identities are not the problem. The problem is a system that exploits our differences, turns neighbours against one another and keeps everyone distracted while unemployment, poverty, injustice and underdevelopment destroy us collectively.

Reject the labels. Identify the real problem. Unite around our common humanity and common interests.
